The Suburban League have announced the Divisions for the 2011/12 Season.

With all four of our teams remaining in the same divisions as last season, opponents will include many familiar foes as well as some new rivalries.

It is with much regret and sadness, that we have to announce the disbanding of the clubs 4th ('B') team. At an emergency committee on Saturday (8/10/2011) it was decided by a majority vote that, due to the ongoing weekly lack of players available for selection, the club had no other option but to fold the team. We have had to call off matches on three of the last four Saturdays at short notice, incurring a £20 fine on each occasion with the points being awarded to our opponents. This situation, we felt couldn't go on indefinitely, and having exhausted all avenues of bringing in more players there was no other decision that could be reached.

The 4th team had been run since 2003 with reasonable success, finishing runners-up in division 5 in 2005/06 and finally being promoted to division 4 in 2009/10 with arguably its best squad during those eight seasons, being known affectionately by those who played over the final two seasons as 'The Vets'.

It is now up to the everyone at the club to pull together and show their commitment to make sure the 4ths will be the ONLY side we are to lose.

The first 'landmark' appearance of the season was made on Saturday (29/10/2011), as Jamie Comley played his 100th game for the club in the first teams 1-4 GFA Senior Amateur Cup 2nd round defeat at high flying Bristol Premier One Combination side Old Sodbury. Jamie played at right back in a solid performance from the lads, who were comfortably holding their higher ranked opponents 1-1 after an hour. The home sides superior fitness eventually told, however the final scoreline was somewhat flattering.

Andy Kendall became the second player this season to guarantee himself a trophy at this years presentation evening. On Saturday (07/01/2012), Andy marked his 100th appearance playing at left back for the 2nd team. Unfortunately, he couldn't prevent his side going down to a 0-8 defeat against second in the table Ingleside. Andy however, is enjoying a good season overall which has been rewarded with several appearances in the first team.

Daryl Litten and Luke Nicholls are the latest players to reach 100 appearances for the club (Saturday 18/02/2012). Player/ Assistant Manager Daryl played in goal for the 2nd team against Broad Plain House Res. but could not prevent them being hammered 1-7 despite leading 1-0 at half-time, leaving them languishing at the bottom of Division 1 with just 2 points from 14 games. Luke faired alot better when reaching his 100th. Despite suffering with an ongoing knee problem, he came on as a substitute mid-way through the second half for the 1sts in their vital 5-2 home victory over bottom but one side Old Georgians. Fingers crossed a couple more wins should see them secure their Premier One status for next season.

It is good to see that alot of the 'younger lads' appear to be showing loyalty to the club, which is being highlighted with the appearance awards achieved so far this season.

Tony 'Wacko' Walker has finally played his 500th game after recovering from injury. In a career spanning thirty one years and four spells at the club Wacko pulled on the goalkeepers shirt to play for the 3rd team, for whom he is Player/ Manager, on Saturday (24/03/2012) against Frys Club Old Boys. On a weekend where there was a serious shortage of players available for selection, Wacko could not prevent his side going down 0-4 despite being voted Man Of The Match for his performance. He joins an elite list of only ten players to have reached the 500 mark. Congratulations 'Wacko' and lets hope you continue playing for a few years yet.

At the recent meeting of the Suburban League Management Committee, it was confirmed that both our 2nd & 3rd teams will be relegated following a disappointing season where both finished one from bottom of their respective divisions (divisions 1 & 3). A major contributing factor in this was both sides struggled for settled sides for much of the season, due to players leaving to play elsewhere, injuries and too many occasions where, at some selection meetings the club had 10-15 players unavailable for various (and often poor) reasons. Coupled with the disbanding of the 4th team earlier in the season, which led to the enforced early retirement of some still very good and experienced players, meant the 2011/12 season was always going to be a tough one for Management teams, Craig & Daryl and Wacko & Les as well as the remaining players.

On a brighter note, our 1st team squad had their second-best finish since being promoted to Premier One some seven seasons ago. Joint Managers Tony Palmer & Ian Pullin worked tirelessly to ensure we had a strong enough side most weeks to compete against some very good sides and secure divisional safety, finishing eleven ponts clear of the drop zone in 10th place. For their efforts, Tony & 'Buck' were awarded the Alan Evans Memorial Trophy for outstanding achievement at the recent presentation evening.

If players can remain committed, we have the basis of a very solid 1st team for a number of seasons and with a few additions to the squad, could be 'up there' challenging for honours, therefore strengthening the club as a whole with the aim of getting the 2nd & 3rds promoted again.
