Puppy Obedient Walks: Building Good Habits Early

Laura Griver, February 13, 2025

Teaching your puppy to walk obediently on a leash is one of the most important skills you’ll teach them. Starting early sets the foundation for enjoyable walks and a strong bond between you and your puppy. With patience and consistency Professional puppy training, your puppy will learn to walk calmly by your side, making outings a fun and relaxing experience for both of you.

1. Introduce the Leash Gradually

Begin leash training indoors to help your puppy get used to wearing a collar or harness. Let them wear the gear for short periods while offering praise and treats. Once they are comfortable, attach the leash and encourage them to explore while walking around the house.

2. Teach Loose Leash Walking

The goal is to have your puppy walk by your side without pulling. If your puppy pulls ahead, stop walking. Wait for them to return to you or for the leash to slacken before continuing. Reward them with treats and praise when they walk calmly beside you. This will help them associate walking nicely with positive reinforcement.

3. Use Short, Positive Sessions

Puppies have short attention spans, so keep training sessions brief and fun—around 5 to 10 minutes at a time. Frequent short sessions are more effective than long ones. Focus on small victories and gradually build up to longer walks.

4. Be Patient and Consistent

Puppies are learning the ropes, so be patient and consistent in your training. Use the same commands, rewards, and expectations during every walk. Over time, your puppy will begin to understand that walking calmly will lead to positive rewards.

Conclusion

Teaching your puppy to walk obediently on a leash requires time, patience, and consistency. By starting early, using positive reinforcement, and staying patient, you’ll set your puppy up for a lifetime of enjoyable, obedient walks. The early training will make future walks more enjoyable and strengthen your relationship with your furry friend.
